Updated framework for public tenders supports circular procurement in Slovenia

22 September 2025 News, Circular procurement

A revised regulation on green public procurement entered into force in Slovenia on 17 September 2025, bringing clearer rules and stronger sustainability requirements for public authorities and businesses.

Public procurement represents about 14 per cent of Slovenia’s GDP, giving it a powerful role in driving environmental and financial savings as well as strengthening the circular economy. The updated rules build on earlier national achievements such as major reductions in CO₂ emissions, water use and costs. They introduce measures including the purchase of second-hand or refurbished equipment, stricter environmental criteria across procurement categories, higher sustainability standards in construction with greater use of wood, and new requirements for data centres and IT equipment.

Training sessions and workshops are also being rolled out across the country to support contracting bodies and suppliers in putting the changes into practice.
